I'm a philosopher based in Hong Kong.

I work on a range of issues in value theory, currently focused on the moral, cognitive, and political implications of large-scale artificial intelligence. Two themes run through this work. One is that we are unlikely to lose control of AI systems. The other is that extreme cognitive assistance carries serious moral and political risks.

I am an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong and a Research Affiliate at the Center for AI Safety. I helped start and now co-direct the Hong Kong Ethics Lab.

I was previously a Faculty Fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, a Research Fellow at the Center for AI Safety, and the Alan and Anita Sutton Distinguished Faculty Fellow at Syracuse University. I received my PhD from UNC Chapel Hill, a terminal MA in Philosophy from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and my BA (in both Philosophy and Classics) from the University of Pittsburgh.
